Do you have a great idea or project aimed at getting more girls and womxn* involved in indoor climbing? Have you always wanted to increase the number of womxn you see in your climbing gym? Now’s your chance to get your grassroots project up and running!
Climbing Escalade Canada is committed to increasing gender equity and access in sport climbing, at all levels of participation and competition. The CEC’s Board of Directors has approved the creation of a Gender Equity Fund to support Canadian initiatives which aim to improve in respect to gender equity in the indoor climbing environment. The CEC’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee has been tasked with managing this fund. *CEC uses the term of “womxn” in an effort to include transgender women, nonbinary people, and cisgender women.
Up to $6000 is being made available, that can be split by up to four (4) projects! Successful projects should address one or both of the following goals:
- LEADERSHIP: Work to increase the number of womxn in coaching, officiating, routesetting and/or leadership positions.
- PARTICIPATION: Deliver measures to increase the participation of girls and womxn in recreational indoor climbing
Projects need to be completed, and/or have a measurable outcome of success that can be reported back to the CEC by March 31, 2021
Example of projects
How about hosting a “womxn-only” bouldering hour, and covering the entry cost to remove a financial barrier to participation? Or hiring a babysitter for the night so that moms’ could bring their kid to the gym? Or bringing a group of womxn together and hosting a free routesetting introduction clinic? How about covering the cost of NCCP Training for womxn interested in coaching? Think of what stops womxn for participating in climbing – and remove these barriers with the help of this grant!
Who can apply for funding?
Applicants for this grant need to be Canadian businesses or organizations. Not a business? Don’t worry! Individuals, or groups of individuals can still apply! You just need to be affiliated with a local business (e.g. your local climbing gym) in order to apply. Just get a letter of support from the affiliated facility or organization, and you’re set! Projects need to focus on indoor rock climbing. Projects also must be able to be completed safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although not required, projects led by womxn will get special consideration.
What do I need to report back to the CEC?
All projects should have some way of measuring their success. Whether you have successfully run a workshop, trained new routesetters, or developed a program, you’ll have to report back what you’ve done, how many people have participated and how you’ve spent the budget. You can get your participants to fill out satisfaction surveys to show your impact, or get feedback from the community on what you have done. But be sure to include how you will measure success, and how your project has improved gender equity in your community. A formal report will be required to be sent to the CEC by March 31, 2021, telling us about your project, how you implemented it, any challenges you faced and how you’ve measured your success.
